Vegas Cops Refuse to Endorse Sheriff Lombardo for Re-Election

An official vote conducted among rank and file officers within the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department determined that disgraced Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo will not be endorsed for re-election by the Las Vegas Police Association.

The vote to not endorse Lombardo was overwhelming, with nearly 82% of LVMPD officers rejecting Lombardo for another term as Sheriff.

On March 20 an email was sent out by the Las Vegas Police Protective Association asking LVMPD officers to vote on whether or not the association would endorse Lombardo, or one of the four other candidates running for Sheriff. The letter, which was sent out to 2,808 officers, was completely ignored by 1,769 members who chose to not open the email, with only 775 members actually casting a vote.

However, in order for the LVPPA to give an official endorsement, it is required that 51% of police members cast a vote. According to numbers provided by LVPPA in the email, only 27% of the rank and file officers casted a vote, which suggests that majority of the rank and file officers in Las Vegas do not particularly like Sheriff Lombardo.

In fact, out of the 775 votes that were cast, Lombardo only received 526, which is 68% of all casted votes.

In the email, LVPPA President Steven Grammas said, “We did not reach the necessary 51% of the membership casting a vote in this endorsement. As such, and in accordance with the Bylaws, the LVPPA will not be endorsing any candidate in this election.”

The refusal and apathy by a majority of Las Vegas police officers to cast a vote in favor of Lombardo reveals a strong contempt for the sitting Sheriff among Las Vegas law enforcement, a contempt that is shared by both local Las Vegas residents as well as concerned American citizens unhappy with Lombardo’s performance.

Sheriff Lombardo’s poor handling of the Oct. 1 Las Vegas shooting has made him a figure of suspicion, nationally, and some say an absolute laughingstock within the LVMPD. His lack of transparency regarding the investigation into the worst mass shooting in U.S. history, his alleged fabrication of the official shooting timeline, and his apparent disregard for freedom of the press has caused LVMPD’s overall reputation to suffer, which in turn has negatively impacted the public’s perception of Metro officers who have now been labeled as corrupt and dishonest by many in the media and public in the aftermath of the October attack.

An LVMPD officer who wishes to remain anonymous told this reporter, “You know it’s bad when the members won’t even open the email because of fear of retaliation, or else. The fact that the officers didn’t even vote shows you how much they hate him.”

Hating Lombardo, as this LVMPD officer described it, is a common feeling at the LVMPD among officers who believe Lombardo has destroyed the reputation of LVMPD on a national scale due to his poor handling of high profile cases such as the Cliven Bundy arrest, the Las Vegas shooting, and most recently, his attempted cover-up of a string of MS-13 gang killings by illegal immigrants in Las Vegas.

Another LVMPD detective added, “What is even more apparent is that the officers of the LVMPD who are LVPPA members have no confidence in their current leader. It will be telling to see if Lombardo attempts to use the endorsement of the LVPPA without the members voting. In 2014, he used the slogan ‘endorsed by law enforcement,’ which wasn’t true. Law enforcement overwhelmingly endorsed Larry Burns for Sheriff.”

In the email sent out by the LVPPA president, it was stated that LVPPA, per the law, cannot give Lombardo an endorsement without 51% of the membership voting. A closer look at the Sheriff’s re-election campaign will determine if Lombardo and the LVPPA will follow rules and guidelines, or disregard the vote, allowing for what happens in Vegas to stay in Vegas.
